Compact Imaging Granted 15th Patent for Miniature, Low-Cost OCT Technology
Company Continues Successful Technical Feasibility Demonstrations for Biometric Security, Mobile Health Monitoring and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT)

Compact Imaging, Inc. (CI), a Silicon Valley technology company developing miniature, low-cost optical sensors for the rapidly growing biometric security, mobile personal health monitoring and non-destructive testing (NDT) markets, today announced that it had been granted an additional US patent.
The new patent increases the CI intellectual property (IP) portfolio to 15 US patents and an equal number of pending US and foreign applications.
The Company’s IP centers on multiple-reference optical coherence tomography (MRO™), CI’s miniature version of optical coherence tomography (OCT). A well-established, non-invasive, non-ionizing imaging technology, OCT is widely used in clinical diagnostic applications. Compact Imaging already has demonstrated technical feasibility of using MRO in several high volume consumer applications.
The latest patent (US 9,113,782) describes generating a set of signature signals that correspond to a range of depths within a target to enable determination of the light scattering characteristics of the target at each depth.
“Compact Imaging’s MRO technology is a highly disruptive system that offers a greater than 100 times reduction in size and cost compared to conventional OCT systems,” said Don Bogue, the Company’s CEO. “MRO opens a wide range of new biological and non-biological imaging and analysis applications to OCT’s powerful depth scanning capabilities.”
The Company is collaborating with Science Foundation Ireland’s Irish Photonic Integration Centre (IPIC) in Cork, Ireland to produce first generation miniature prototypes of the MRO™ photonic module.
“Ultimately, MRO modules will be consistent in size, cost and operating power with integration into mobile monitoring devices for applications such as biometric security, health and fitness, cosmetics and eye care,” said Bogue.
Compact Imaging and the Tissue Optics and Microcirculation Imaging (TOMI) laboratories at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG) have a longstanding research collaboration under which TOMI is conducting long term system and application research on MRO. CI and NUIG researchers have been working together since 2012, leading to the successful technical demonstration of several new MRO applications, creation of significant IP and publication of a large body of research papers.
