Industry Pioneer ReplayTV® Licenses
Command Audio DVR Technology
Joins Growing List of Companies Authorized to Use Company’s Patents
REDWOOD SHORES, CA - April 25, 2006 - Command Audio Corp., a leader in the development of broadcast on-demand media technology, today announced that ReplayTV, Emmy Award winning creator of personal television, has licensed Command Audio’s patented DVR technology.
Under terms of the agreement, ReplayTV has made a financial settlement for its past use of Command Audio’s patented technology and taken a royalty-bearing license for future use of that technology in its digital video recorders (DVRs, also known as personal video recorders, or PVRs) and its software that enables personal computers to provide DVR functionality. The worldwide agreement runs for the life of Command Audio’s DVR patents. No financial terms were disclosed.
Command Audio previously has licensed its patents and technology to industry leaders in the consumer and automotive electronics fields, including iBiquity Digital’s HD Radio™, Motorola (NYSE: MOT), Sony (NYSE: SNE) and XM Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: XMSR).
“We are very pleased to add another industry pioneer and technology leader such as ReplayTV as a licensee,” said Don Bogue, Chairman and CEO of Command Audio. “Our patents are critical to the time-shifting functionality and convenience that millions of TV viewers and radio listeners are demanding. Our license agreement with ReplayTV further reinforces the strength and value of our patents. We expect continued success as we actively protect and license our intellectual property.”
ReplayTV, which introduced its first DVR in 1999, has been a consistent leader in offering innovative products to the burgeoning DVR market, where leading independent industry analysts estimate that more than 30 million units have shipped to date and forecast more than 35% annual growth for the next five years. In December 2005, ReplayTV announced its intention to bring to market in 2006 advanced DVR software and services for consumers of entertainment PCs.
Command Audio holds 38 U.S. and foreign patents with applications that span the radio, television, cell phone and game console industries.
“The demand for devices and services that provide consumers convenient time-shifting functionality is growing rapidly in each of our target markets,” said Bogue. “The ReplayTV agreement speaks to our ability to license our technology to the most innovative participants in these fast-growing markets.”
