Sonoma County District Selects
Bay Area's 1st Green-Certified Roofer
Blue Turtle Roofing of San Rafael for Environmental Center.
Harmony Union School District to Utilize
Green Roofing Technology in Pursuit of
LEED Gold Certification for Salmon Creek Falls.
San Rafael, CA - June 26, 2008
The Harmony Union School District announced today that the roofing bid for the Salmon Creek Falls Environmental Center in Occidental has been awarded to Marin County’s Blue Turtle Roofing , the Bay Area’s first green-certified roofing company.
The Harmony Union School District is using alternative building technologies to reduce its energy use for the Salmon Creek Falls Environmental Center. The District will be seeking a Gold LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
Blue Turtle Roofing, based in San Rafael, uses zero VOC (volatile organic compounds) seamless roof membranes and solar-reflective top coats. For the Salmon Creek project, it will be using zero VOC Neptune Coatings, a seamless water proofing membrane to seal the roof followed by the Ultimate Coatings Company’s solar reflective elastomeric topcoat.
“We are very proud to have been selected to contribute to this project,” said Blue Turtle Roofing owner Paul Benson, who also owns Paul Benson Painting Company. “The Center is widely recognized for its environmental education activities. The process of selection was rigorous because the building is seeking a gold standard LEED designation.
“To obtain the gold designation, every supplier must also meet LEED standards,” he said, “an accomplishment that we are extremely proud of. Our commitment to environmentally-sound practices is the core of our business. And, because our painting company is also green-certified by Marin County, we think that we are in a unique position to participate with partners who share our commitment.”
David Miller, Harmony School District Superintendent said, “It will be wonderful for our students to have a place to eat and learn and for our community to have a place to use that is a powerful example of what being responsible toward our environment and reducing our carbon footprint means.”
The Sonoma County school, which has an enrollment of 257 students, will have facilities within the Green Certified building to house a cafeteria, environmental resource center and auditorium for student and community use. In addition to seeking the LEED Certification on the new building, the school is powered by solar energy as the Salmon Creek Falls Environmental Center will be when the project is complete.
“Our goal was to create a building with stunning architecture that is open to the public to demonstrate green building principals,” said Victoria Johnston, the Project Facilitator. Dennis Rosatti, a Harmony Union School board member said, “In choosing this project, the School Board is representing the public will for a healthy environment for our students using the highest standards of environmental stewardship”.
