Redwood Credit Union Supports United Way With Employee Volunteer Days Around the North Bay

Projects Completed at Non-Profits in Marin, Sonoma and Mendocino Counties; Annual Drive Raises more than $90,000

Santa Rosa, September 18, 2013—Forty-nine Redwood Credit Union (RCU) employees helped “celebrate” a series of events during the United Way annual Week of Caring by volunteering to help non-profits throughout the North Bay over the past two weeks.

In Marin County, on Monday at Homeward Bound in Novato, RCU employees joined program participants to tend the 23-row pesticide free garden and new edible landscape garden at the New Beginnings Center.  Volunteers also helped weed, harvest vegetables for the Homeward Bound kitchens and learned how the food production facility supports the homeless and the job training program at the Fresh Starts Culinary Academy.

In Sonoma County, another group of RCU employees gardened, cleaned windows and painted at The Children’s Village in Santa Rosa, an organization which provides nurturing and family-style homes for children and siblings in foster care.

In Mendocino County, RCU partnered with the Boys and Girls Club in Ukiah, to refinish and to stain the picnic tables that RCU volunteers had built at the same event in 2012. They also planted flowers and vegetables.

A final group of RCU volunteers will deploy in Napa County Wednesday to help restore native grassland by removing Harding grass in the Archer Taylor Preserve for the Land Trust of Napa County.

RCU is also in the final weeks of its annual United Way employee giving campaign, which will raise more than $90,000 for the second consecutive year.

“The United Way Week of Caring and fund drive are two exceptionally important efforts our staff is proud to support each year,” said Robin McKenzie, RCU senior vice president. “We hope we will inspire more local non-profits and businesses to join with United Way’s programs and help make a difference in our communities.”

United Way’s Week of Caring annually pairs volunteers from local companies with community non-profits that need extra hands on projects where they lack resources to complete.

In addition to the Week of Caring volunteer events, RCU also supports numerous local non-profits including the Redwood Empire, Napa and Marin/SF Food Banks, Tomorrow’s Leaders Today, the American Red Cross and local Volunteer Centers.
