Tamalpais Bank Offers Marin Schools Children’s Financial Education Teaching Resources
“Practical Money Skills for Life” Helps Teachers Make Learning about Money Fun and Easy
San Rafael, CA - May 1, 2007 - Tamalpais Bank today announced the availability of “Practical Money Skills for Life”, a website and teachers’ aid program that will be provided without charge to schools in Marin County and is designed to make teaching children about money fun and easy.
The Bank, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Epic Bancorp (NASDAQ: EPIK), recently announced TamBuck$ Kids Savings Account, a program for children that allows participants to earn awards, in addition to interest, for accounts opened at any of its seven branch locations in Marin County.
“Our objective is to emphasize the value of financial literacy for children,” said Mark Garwood, CEO/president, “and to extend the educational aspects of the program into the home and schools.”
“We know that children embrace learning when it is fun and provides rewards and incentives. TamBuck$ and the Practical Money Skills program were designed with this in mind. By providing lesson plans and additional material to schools, we want to help schools and their teachers adopt financial education into their curriculum.”
The TamBuck$ program combines a basic savings plan for children up to the age of 12 into an offering that provides passbook savings and incentives for regular deposits. For every new deposit children make, they can earn TamBuck$ and exchange them for various items.
“The facts are that Marin County has the highest family mean income in the state and the most expensive housing,” Garwood said. “It is extremely important in this financial environment that schools have access to teaching resources to help children and families facilitate the discussion of subjects as basic as allowances, how much things cost and how to save to pay for them.”
There are no fees for any of the material included in the Practical Money Skills for Life program. “We are already providing bank staff to work with teachers,” said Garwood. “We have had classes from schools in Terra Linda and San Anselmo visit the Kids’ Zone areas in our branches to participate in the program.”
By utilizing Practical Money Skills for Life, teachers and schools will have access to teaching resources that include:
- A pamphlet series that includes lesson plans, worksheets and calculators to help students develop personal finance, budgeting and money management skills
- Interactive games, including a Financial Football Training Camp program
- A regular newsletter with new resources and ideas for implementing Practical Money Skills for Life
TamBuck$ Kids Savings Accounts for children can be opened by an adult at all seven of Tamalpais Bank’s seven Marin County locations (Corte Madera, Greenbrae, Mill Valley, Northgate, San Anselmo, San Rafael and Tiburon/Belvedere). The adult does not need to have a Tamalpais Bank account to enroll a child in the program.
The program is easy to enroll and participate in:
- An adult signer can enroll a child at any branch.
- There are no minimum deposits and all deposits are FDIC insured to the extent provided by law.
- Each deposit earns TamBuck$ which can be redeemed for more than one dozen awards.
Brochures outlining the program are available at the branch locations and at the Tamalpais Bank website (www.tambank.com). There is also a link to a special Practical Money Skills for Life site (www.tambank.com/practicalmoneyskills) which contains information, resources and references materials for teachers and parents.
